The trading volume of green electricity in Jiangsu Province reached 12.657 billion kilowatt-hours in 2024, a 143% year-on-year increase, according to the Jiangsu Electricity Trading Center on February 17. This increase is equivalent to reducing coal consumption by over 3.88 million tonnes and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by about 9.69 million tonnes.

Green electricity refers to the power generated with zero or near-zero carbon dioxide emissions during production, primarily sourced from renewable energy such as solar and wind power.

Since China’s launch of the green electricity trading initiative in 2021, Jiangsu's trading scale has soared from 1.369 billion kilowatt-hours to over 12 billion kilowatt-hours, with an average annual growth rate of 110%.

During this year's Spring Festival holiday, nearly 3,000 charging stations supplied green electricity to drivers, with a total of 20 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity traded during the holiday.

The trading center’s general manager, Wei Xu, said that Jiangsu's green electricity trading volume accounts for 6.3% of the total electricity consumption and is expected to exceed 15% by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025).
